Oslo

Some top tips I wish I’d known for Oslo coming right up!

Lots of pictures are available on the @thepotteringpanda Instagram!

1. Believe people when they say it is expensive

It really is one of the most expensive places I have ever been. Do bear this in mind, as even supermarkets are very expensive. Alcohol while we were here was also a no go due to price. Some sacrifices have to be made I suppose…

Lunch times are generally cheaper, so stock up then. Norwegian people are paid more and so the difference to them seems less than to many of  us!

Always check the menu online or before you go in. Trip Advisor’s cheap eat function was particularly handy.

2. Camping laws

Norway has excellent camping laws meaning you can camp anywhere. Worth taking advantage of, especially if you are a keen camper!

3. Public Transport

The public transport system is fabulous here. Use it! The boats out to the small islands around Oslo are very easily accessible. You can get a zone 1 card that covers all of these, and you can either hop on and off at each island (check the last boat time, especially in winter!) or stay on the boat and see each Island from afar. We decided to just explore Hovedoya.

4. Daytime hours

Do check what time of year you are going and plan activities accordingly. Oslo gets alot of sunlight in summer, and gets dark VERY quickly in Winter. We went in November and by 3pm it was dark. Worth bearing in mind!
